How to Create an Organized Homework Station

School is back, and along with it all of the take-home papers and homework assignments. Set your child up for success with all the necessities they'll need to focus on their daily assignments. We're sharing simple tips for creating a distraction-free homework station that is sure to inspire!

Choose a Location

A designated area in the bedroom, office, or even playroom/kids’ space is ideal. Add a desk, comfortable chair and table lamp. If space is limited, you might consider creating a homework cart that can be used at any table or countertop and tucked away when not in use.

Gather Supplies

Consider and gather the supplies your child will need for a typical homework assignment, like pencils, erasers and a calculator, and even things like coloring utensils, crayons and glue. The more they have everything they need available and organized, the better.

Categorize

Once you have all the supplies gathered, contain each category within a divided organizer, canister or drawer organizer. If you're using a desk, place the most often used items on the desktop for easy access. Then, tuck all other supplies out of sight in drawer organizers, or in the remaining sections of the divided organizer. If you’re implementing a more modular station (like on a rolling cart), a divided organizers like the ones pictured below, work particularly great.

Contain Clutter

As soon as school starts, the endless papers coming in and out of the house can be a source of frustration (and also confusion). Contain paper clutter by setting up a system for those incoming and outgoing documents. You can create your organized system with “Incoming” and “Outgoing” paper stations for each child. Magazine files and stackable paper trays work well (one for incoming & one for outgoing, per child) but if you’re short on counter space, take advantage of wall space through wall-mounted files.

For those “reference” documents you may need to access from time-to-time, desktop file boxes work well.

All of this can be setup right at the homework station, but also in the mudroom, entry or wherever you might have a “central command” area.
