How We Would Design Our Own Coastal Home
Coastal interiors can conjure images of 'beach this way' signs, among other motifs, as well as an endless sea of blue cushions. But when designed in harmony with (rather than in imitation of) the surrounding areas, coastal interiors can be fresh, handsome and interesting, while still providing that relaxation and comfort and coziness they’re synonymous with.
How We’d Approach The Design Of Our Own Coastal Home
Our own coastal home’s aesthetic would land somewhere between an understated Nantucket shack, a city-influenced Hamptons dwelling, a New England-meets-English Cottage and a minimalistic restrained Jenni Kayne vibe: The feeling of the ocean everywhere without its interiors telling you overtly so. You don’t see much that’s coastal-specific, rather its presence is felt. Heavy on neutrals with incorporation of sea colors and blues without feeling like they’re putting on a costume. Slipcovered sofas, comfortable seating, vintage surfaces, antique lighting. The best coastal homes have space to breathe, are rooted in simplicity and embody a certain austerity. No matter the square footage, coastal homes should feel expansive, with the ability to look from room to room and out the windows.
Natural materials: Using materials inspired by nature will be your ultimate friend when creating a timeless and fresh space. Think natural jute rugs, lightweight linens, solid wood furniture and stone.
Pattern: Be selective with the patterns and prints you use. Pinstripes and ticking stripes are always a classic nautical print without feeling themed. Make it contemporary by using them in a big way, like a striped breakfast nook banquette or powder room drenched in striped wallpaper all around.
Curate A Theme: Although leaning too hard into the coastal aesthetic will age your space, being selective with items that nod to your surroundings will add your own personality. For example, a pair of polished nickel sea shell wall sconces with plenty of patina.
Timeless Details: Stick to the classics like Polished Nickel, Antique Zinc Light Fixtures, Vintage Glass that aren’t “coastal”-specific, but will keep things timeless and revered.
Sweet Touches: Scallop details found in light fixtures, pleats in the right places.
